Lille - first prize
Created at the occasion of Lille 2004 European Culture Capital. The Parc de la Deule was designed to host 10 gardens dedicated to immigration communities of the metropolitan area. We realized a garden dedicated to the Iberic community. A contemporary transcription of traditional north Portuguese and Spanish structures, as well as a communication of the southern Europe social values of a garden: intimate, welcoming and dreamish. Our challenge was to adapt another culture’s spatial values to the northern French landscape, flat, wet, grey and cold.
The design process included representatives of the community, and we tried to answer the typical motives that we all agreed on, in a contemporary vocabulary. This public space has not only become a community icon, but the most popular space for all visitors and for the client, because of its balance between intimacy and warm atmosphere.
